<p>Remote (New York City Preferred) | Part-Time (Transitioning to Full-Time)</p><p><br></p><p><strong>About the Role</strong></p><p>A historic American magazine of ideas, originally founded in 1924 and once an important forum for intellectual and cultural life, is being rebuilt for a new era. The new publication will focus on science, arts, letters, and public life, combining an ambitious digital publication with a quarterly print magazine launching in September 2027. It draws on the extraordinary legacy of the original while creating something distinctly contemporary.</p><p>The publication is hiring an Editorial Associate to work directly with the Founding Editor and closely with the Managing Editor, Publisher, and broader editorial team. This is not a conventional position at an established publication. The person joining will help create the editorial systems, contributor relationships, and working culture of a historic title being rebuilt from the ground up. The position begins part-time hourly with the expectation of transitioning to full-time as editorial activity accelerates.</p><p><strong>What the Role Covers</strong></p><ul><li>Helping identify outstanding writers, thinkers, subjects, and emerging intellectual and cultural conversations</li><li>Researching prospective contributors and preparing background and briefing materials</li><li>Supporting the editorial team in commissioning and developing articles</li><li>Communicating professionally and thoughtfully with distinguished writers and contributors</li><li>Maintaining the contributor database and prospective writer lists for upcoming issues</li><li>Tracking commissions, assignments, deadlines, submissions, revisions, and publication status</li><li>Maintaining draft histories and author correspondence</li><li>Coordinating contracts, permissions, photography, biographies, and other contributor materials</li><li>Maintaining the editorial calendar and detailed production grids</li><li>Helping coordinate the editorial process from initial idea through publication</li><li>Working closely with the Managing Editor on editorial workflow and production coordination</li><li>Following up on decisions, assignments, deadlines, and next steps to ensure nothing falls through the cracks</li><li>Researching archival material and helping develop the publication's historic archive for contemporary use</li><li>Assisting with newsletters, digital publishing, podcasts, special projects, events, and other editorial initiatives as they develop</li><li>Helping build the systems and processes required for an ambitious new publication to operate effectively</li></ul><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p>The publication is looking for intelligence, curiosity, judgment, initiative, editorial sensibility, organization, and the ability to get things done. There is no single resume that defines the right candidate.</p><ul><li>Intellectually curious across literature, science, technology, history, culture, philosophy, politics, and the forces transforming society</li><li>Excellent reader, writer, researcher, and critical thinker</li><li>Exceptionally organized with ability to manage many simultaneous assignments</li><li>Digitally fluent and comfortable learning new editorial and organizational tools</li><li>Comfortable communicating with highly accomplished writers, academics, scientists, artists, and public intellectuals</li><li>Resourceful and able to take initiative without waiting for detailed instructions</li><li>Attentive to detail and extremely reliable about follow-through</li><li>Comfortable moving between large intellectual questions and small logistical details</li><li>Able to bring order and clarity to a fast-moving startup environment</li><li>Collaborative, thoughtful, discreet, and professional</li></ul><p>Experience at a magazine, newspaper, digital publication, publishing house, think tank, university, cultural institution, or similar organization is valuable but not essential.
